We know it can be difficult to talk about intimate personal issues like sexual activity- especially to a complete stranger. However, our psychosexual therapists are specifically trained to help couples and individuals who find that sexual difficulties are at the root of their problems.
The therapists are comfortable talking about sexual problems and can put clients at ease quickly. They are hard to shock and they will make it easy for people to talk.
Many people, both men and women, experience a sexual problem at some stage of their lives. This can be the result of stress, illness, childbirth or other life events. Loss or lack of sexual desire is very common for both partners. One partner may want sex more frequently than the other. There may be pain or discomfort associated with sexual activity. Sometimes the cause can be more complicated and our therapists are skilled in helping to explore and understand the possible reasons.
Sexual difficulties in a relationship can be very upsetting and it really helps to try to work it out and deal with the psychological and/or physical causes. Once we have explored those we can then move into helping to improve the sexual relationship. Where possible it is preferable to attend the service as a couple, but individuals can also be helped. As the therapy continues, people become more relaxed and talking becomes easier
Psychosexual therapy is a highly specialised field and MRCS provides the service through professionally trained therapists who are subject to ongoing accreditation. Every couple is different and our therapists have the skills and experience to help resolve problems by designing specific approaches appropriate to the couple’s concerns.
As we have become more open about discussing the topic of sex and as couples begin to recognise the importance of a healthy sexual relationship, we are seeing more demand for our psychosexual therapy. ‘Sexual problems’ is one of the top five issues raised in at least one counselling session here in MRCS. And if we factor in communication issues and work and financial pressures, then the problem is likely to be even more prevalent.
